The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, has called for an independent, thorough and impartial investigation into the death of Abu Tijani, popularly known as “Master One,” a double murder suspect who reportedly died while in police custody.
Addressing a press conference on the matter, Hon. Toobu raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the death and stressed the need for a credible investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
The Wa West legislator said although Abu Tijani, youth leader in Wechiau, was a suspect in the high-profile murder case in the area, his status as a suspect did not take away his fundamental human rights or the responsibility of the state to ensure his safety while in custody.
He noted that the death of a person in police custody is a serious matter that must be handled with transparency and professionalism to maintain public confidence in the country’s security and justice institutions.
Hon. Toobu therefore called on the appropriate authorities to conduct a full and impartial inquiry into the incident and make the findings available to the public.
He further appealed to the public, particularly residents of the Wechiau community, to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course.
The MP also urged all stakeholders to avoid comments and actions that could heighten tensions or lead to further conflict, stressing the importance of peace, unity and cooperation during the investigation.
Hon. Toobu assured the people of Wa West that he would continue to engage the relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that the matter is properly addressed and that justice is served.
The death of Abu Tijani, alias “Master One,” has generated public concern and renewed calls for clarity over the circumstances that led to his death while in police custody.
While the police said the Abu Tijani died after complaining of severe headache and receiving adequate medical care, residents of Wechiau, particularly the youth, have rejected the report. Some have argued that the death is a result of wanton beatings and manhandling by police officers when the suspect was in their custody.
Many are demanding for independent and transferable investigation into the matter as some believe there is foul play that led to the death of Master One.
