Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa West Constituency, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has pledged to give full educational and sporting support to Alberta Mumaah, a Basic Seven student of Samambo Junior High School in the Wa West District and gold medalist at the 35th Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival.
With outstanding performance at the event held in Accra between August 25 and September 4, Alberta emerged as the only athlete from the Upper West Region to win a gold medal at the national competition, where she represented the region in the javelin event.
Celebrating the achievement, Hon. Toobu presented GH¢2,000 to Alberta and pledged to support her throughout her education and sporting career, until she decides to retire from the sport.
“Alberta, from today, your school fees are in my pocket,” he declared.
The Hon MP also promised to provide Alberta with three brand-new javelins for her personal training, adding that he would provide other necessary support to help her develop her talent.
Peter Lanchene said the entire Wa West District was proud of Alberta’s achievement and expressed his belief in her potential to compete and win at the international level as she grows and gains more experience.
He encouraged Alberta to remain committed to developing her passion for athletics and urged other students in the district to see her achievement as an inspiration.
The MP further advised students to identify and develop their talents, listen to their teachers and take both academic work and extracurricular activities seriously.
He expressed optimism that the district could produce more outstanding footballers and athletes in the future, if the necessary attention is paid to sports.
Meanwhile, representative of the Headmaster of Samambo JHS, Abdulai Ibrahim, expressed gratitude to the MP for supporting the young athlete.
He described the gesture as an indication that sporting activities should be taken seriously, particularly by students.
Mr. Ibrahim said Alberta had made a name for herself and the school at the national level, and urged students to always give their best in whatever they pursue.
He said such dedication would not only bring recognition to individuals but also help promote the image of Wa West, the Upper West Region and Ghana as a whole.
