The Member of Parliament for the Wa West Constituency, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, has donated medical equipment and supplies to the Wechiau District Hospital to help improve healthcare delivery in the Wa West District.
The donation, according to the MP, forms part of his commitment to addressing the healthcare needs of constituents and ensuring that residents have access to quality healthcare.
Speaking during the presentation, Hon. Toobu said, as the representative of the people of Wa West in Parliament, it is his responsibility to contribute to improving their wellbeing, particularly in the area of healthcare.
He expressed confidence that the medical equipment and supplies would go a long way to support health facilities and improve the delivery of healthcare services across the district.
Mr. Lanchene Toobu commended the District Health Directorate and health workers across Wa West for their hard work, resilience and commitment to providing healthcare services to residents.
Hospital Lacks Chemistry Analyser
Receiving the donation, the Medical Superintendent of the Wa West District Hospital, Dr. Ireneus Kyebambo, expressed gratitude to the MP for his continued support to the facility.
Dr. Kyebambo said the MP had earlier contacted him to identify some of the medical equipment and supplies the facility lacked, noting that the donated items have now been delivered to the hospital.
He recalled that the MP previously supported the facility with GH¢40,000 following a fire outbreak that affected its laboratory. According to Dr. Kyebambo, the MP also provided the hospital with GH¢10,000 towards activities marking the 2026 World Hypertension Day.
Dr. Kyebambo, however, appealed to the MP to assist the hospital in acquiring a chemistry analyser, which is used to conduct tests for liver and kidney functions.
He explained that the Wechiau District Hospital serves as the main referral facility for such cases in the district, but the absence of the equipment has made it difficult for health professionals to conduct the necessary tests on patients suffering from liver and kidney-related conditions.
He believes the availability of the chemistry analyser will largely help in giving timely care and treatment to people with liver and kidney-related issues in the area.
Cash Donation and Disbursement
In addition to the medical supplies, the MP donated GH¢300,000 to the Wa West District Health Directorate to support healthcare delivery.
Hon. Toobu explained that the amount represents his share of the National Health Insurance Scheme funds and should be used to address some critical infrastructure, equipment and operational needs within the district.
The MP gave specific directives on how the GH¢300,000 should be disbursed.
He directed that GH¢25,000 be used to support administrative activities, while GH¢20,000 should be used to renovate the Laadayiri CHIPS compound.
He further allocated GH¢20,000 to support the completion of the Piisie maternity block and another GH¢20,000 for the completion of the Ponyentanga nurses’ quarters.
Tanina maternity block and Domangili maternity block were allocated GH¢20,000 and GH¢25,000 respectively, while GH¢20,000 was earmarked for the purchase of a new motorbike for the Nyagili CHIPS compound.
The MP also allocated GH¢25,000 to the Bankpama maternity block, GH¢20,000 to the Domawa maternity block, and GH¢10,000 to support the completion of the Kokpale nurses’ block.
He further directed that GH¢25,000 be added to the GH¢75,000 he had earlier donated to the people of Eggu to support the construction of a medical laboratory.
GH¢30,000 was earmarked for the procurement of anti-snake venom and Hepatitis B and C vaccines, while GH¢15,000 was allocated for the repair of broken-down motorbikes serving health facilities in the district.
The MP directed that the remaining GH¢20,000 be used to procure delivery beds and distribute them to health facilities where they are most needed.
Hon. Toobu said the interventions are aimed at addressing some of the immediate challenges confronting health facilities in the district and improving access to quality healthcare for all residents.
He urged the health directorate to ensure that the funds and items are used for their intended purposes to achieve maximum impact.
DDHS expresses gratitude, asks for Ambulance
The District Director of Health Services for the Wa West District, Madam Cecilia Kakariba, expressed gratitude to the Member of Parliament for his continued support to the health sector in the district.
She said the donation was not the first time the MP had come to the aid of the health facilities in the district.
In addition to what the Medical Superintendent of the hospital had mentioned, Madam Kakariba recalled that the MP previously supported the facility with GH¢35,000 after its roof was ripped off by a rainstorm.
She added that he also supported the Piisie Maternity Block, which was initiated by an NGO, to help improve maternal healthcare delivery in the area.
Madam Kakariba encouraged the MP to continue supporting the people of Wa West by responding to their healthcare needs.
She further appealed to him to lobby for an ambulance for the facility, explaining that the district often relies on ambulances from the regional service during emergencies.
According to her, the regional ambulances are frequently unavailable because they are already attending to other emergencies, making it difficult for the facility to secure timely transportation for patients.
She therefore urged the MP to intensify his lobbying efforts to help secure an ambulance for the facility to improve emergency healthcare delivery in the district.
