The Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo, in collaboration with the Wa Municipal Assembly, is undertaking major improvement works on the road leading to the Wa-Sombo Cemetery to make it safer and more accessible for residents and visitors.
The road, which has been in poor condition for some time, has become even more difficult to use following recent rains, prompting calls from residents for urgent intervention.
Speaking to the media, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaj Issah Nura Danwana, explained that the road had remained in a poor condition since the cemetery was relocated to the current site. According to him, residents had made several appeals to the Assembly to fix the road, but the lack of funds made it difficult to undertake the necessary construction works.
He, however, said the Assembly has now been able to mobilise funds to commence improvement works on the road with a chunk of the money coming from Dr. Pelpuo.
He explained that grading and gravelling works are currently being carried out to make the cemetery road more motorable for road users.
The Municipal Chief Executive described the improvement of the road as a priority for both the Assembly and the Member of Parliament, Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo.
He further disclosed that the MP has made a significant financial contribution towards the project, with nearly 70 percent of the financing for the work so far coming from the Member of Parliament.
Alhaj Nura Danwana stressed that the project remains an Assembly project and, due to financial constraints, he could not assure residents that the road would be fully tarred anytime soon. He, however, assured residents that the Assembly would continue to work to ensure that the road is made smooth and safe for motorists and other road users.
The MCE also cautioned against the improper laying of water pipes along road corridors, saying such activities often create challenges for contractors and affect road construction works. He urged residents and relevant stakeholders to ensure that water pipes are laid deep underground to prevent damage to the roads and make construction works easier.
Aside the Sombo Cemetery road, the Wa Municipal Assembly is working on other roads within the Wa Municipality. Alhaj Issah Nura Danwana disclosed that the Assembly has so far worked on more than 41 kilometres of roads, although its overall target is to improve about 150 kilometres of roads within the municipality.
He could not give a specific timeframe for the completion of additional roads but assured residents that more roads in the Wa township would be completed before 2028.
