The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has announced that four communities in the district will be connected to the national electricity grid by September this year, as part of government’s efforts to improve access to electricity across the area.
The beneficiary communities are Gurungu, Varimpere, Meteu, and Kawu, where electrification projects have stalled since 2016 despite the erection of electricity poles and wiring.
Speaking during an inspection of the project in late June, Mr. Toobu said the projects have now been repackaged and awarded to David & Sons Ltd, with the contractor expected to complete the works within the next three months.

He noted that the intervention forms part of the government’s broader agenda to increase electricity coverage in the Wa West District from the current 26 percent to about 55 percent by 2028.
According to the MP, the government, under President John Dramani Mahama has earmarked 55 additional communities in Wa West for new electricity connections over the next two years.
Mr. Toobu expressed optimism that expanding access to electricity will stimulate economic activities, improve education and healthcare delivery, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents in the beneficiary communities.
Checks indicate that the contractor, D&S Ltd, has already taken site in Gurungu and working to deliver the project within the proposed timeline.
Residents of the beneficiary communities have welcomed the renewed commitment, expressing hope that the long-delayed projects will finally be completed after years of waiting.
