A not-for-profit organisation, the M.A Seidu Education Fund has commited an amount of Ghc 15,000 to aid the transition of five brilliant and needy Junior High School graduates to second-cycle education.
The beneficiary students, comprising three males and two females, were the top five performers in the Wa West District in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
They include Abdulai Rashad, a graduate of Ga D/A JHS with aggragate 21; Yirkpa Florence, a former student of Poyentanga R/C JHS with aggregate 22; and Toodare Christiana Yentuna, a graduate of Perculiar Minds Complex, with aggragate 23.
The others are Lana-Ire Gideon, also from Poyentanga R/C JHS with aggregate 23 and Ali Sumbu, a former student of Zanko E/P JHS who had aggregate 24.
The top performers have since gained admissions to pursue their secondary school education at Nandom SHS, Kanton SHS, Kyem Amponsah SHS, Lassia Tuolu SHS and Nandom SHS, respectively.
Speaking at a short ceremonny held on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at the Wa West District Assembly to confer the awards, Deputy Director in charge of Monitoring and Supervision at the Wa West Education Directorate, Mr. Gbaara Joseph, described the gesture from the M.A Seidu Education Fund as refreshing and visionary.
He explained that each beneficiary student was to receive GH¢ 3,000, adding that the package is expected to support the purchase of learning materials and to meet other academic-related expenses.
The Wa West District Director of Education, Hon. Kassim Seidu, said the educational support package will, without doubt, ease the financial burden on the parents and guardians in preparing the beneficiaries to enrol at their respective secondary schools.
He was optimistic that the support will enable the students to pursue their academic aspirations without interruption
Mr. Seidu urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously, avoid bad company and eschew social vices, stating that “Education is the way to go and has the power to shift lives and create opportunities for a better tomorrow”.
Hon. Seidu, expressed his desire for the beneficiaries to achieve great success in their educational journey and contribute meaningfully to society when the opportunity presented itself.
On his part, the District Chief Executive for the Wa West, Hon. Richard Wullo, praised the MA Seidu Education Fund for the continuous support for education in the district.
Acknowledging the Fund’s awards for best performing BECE students for the past three years, Hon Richard said “The Fund’s intervention reflects its commitment to creating opportunities for young people to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.”
He encouraged the students to diligently pursue their education and cultivate skills that would enable them to make positive contributions to their communities in the future.
The DCE also indicated the District Assembly’s commitment to further supporting these pupils should they excel beyound their secondary education.
Mr. Wulo, however, did not hide his disappointment over the fact that the best aggregate for the district in the 2026 BECE was 21. Wishing that it was a single aggregate, he called on education stakeholders in the area to do more to enhance the perfomance going forward.
The M.A Seidu Education Fund was established in memory and honour of the late Mumuni Abudu Seidu, popularly knownas M.A., former Member of Parliament for Wa Central Constituency and Minister of State at the presidency.
As an educationist, M.A. was the first Upper West Regional Director of Education. He also served as headmaster of the now Wa Senior High School and established Dan-Ibu International School, a private basic school in Wa.
The aim of the M.A. Seidu Education Fund is to provide financial support and mentorship to brilliant but needy students in the Upper West Region to enable their successful enrolment and completion of second-cycle education.
