The Wa West District Directorate of Education, on Friday, July 24, 2026, officially launched a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Project to strengthen mathematics education and promote innovation among basic school pupils.
The project, spearheaded by Professor Joseph Ofori Dankwa, a Ghanaian philanthropist based in the United States, is aimed at improving pupils’ performance in mathematics while equipping them with problem-solving, critical thinking and digital skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Speaking at the launch, the Wa West District Director of Education, Mr. Ametus Tug-uu, described the initiative as a timely intervention that would prepare children for a future shaped by technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
He noted that AI is transforming the way people learn, work and solve problems, stressing that children must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to become innovators and leaders rather than followers in the emerging digital era.
Mr. Tug-uu called on parents, teachers and community leaders to embrace and support the initiative to ensure its successful implementation and long-term impact.
The Guest of Honour, Professor Joseph Ofori Dankwa said the project was designed to improve mathematics education in the district by inspiring Junior High School students to develop a greater interest in the subject and excel in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
He expressed confidence that with effective monitoring, strong collaboration and sustained support, the project would help students appreciate mathematics, build confidence in the subject and apply mathematical concepts in their everyday lives.
Professor Dankwa added that the innovative teaching approach would make mathematics more practical, engaging and enjoyable for learners.
The STEM Coordinator for Northern Ghana, Mr. Ditamina Gambil Emmanuel, pledged his full support for the initiative, noting that quality STEM education depends on the availability of adequate teaching and learning resources.
He observed that many students perceive STEM subjects as difficult due to ineffective teaching methods and limited educational materials. He assured stakeholders of his commitment to mobilising the necessary resources to support the successful implementation of the project.
Also addressing the gathering, the Head of the Department of Educational Foundations at the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Dr. Flora Chirani, commended Professor Dankwa for spearheading the initiative.
She described the project as a bold step towards transforming education and challenged educators, institutions and development partners to move beyond conventional teaching approaches by embracing innovation and collaboration to improve learning outcomes for children.
The launch of the STEM project took place at Wechau-Bao, a farming community in the Ga Traditional Area.
Representing the Chief of Ga, Hon. Cornelius Kuusani expressed appreciation to Professor Joseph Ofori Dankwa and all stakeholders for bringing the STEM project to the community.
He encouraged young people to emulate the achievements of Professor Dankwa and other distinguished personalities by dedicating themselves to education and skills development instead of engaging in illegal mining and other activities that offer short-term gains at the expense of their future.
The STEM Project is expected to enhance mathematics teaching and learning in Wa West, inspire greater interest in science and technology, and nurture a new generation of innovative thinkers capable of contributing to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
