Dombo Family denies endorsing Bryan Acheampong, reaffirms support for Bawumia

The Dombo family of Jirapa has strongly refuted claims that it has endorsed New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, describing a recent headline by The Chronicle newspaper as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the family said it was compelled to set the record straight after the newspaper carried a banner headline reading, “Dombo Family Backs Bryan.” According to the family, the publication created a false impression that does not reflect their publicly stated position in the upcoming NPP flagbearership primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.

“At no time has the Dombo family endorsed or supported Dr Bryan Acheampong in relation to the party’s flagbearership contest,” the statement stressed.

The family clarified that its support has consistently been for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, noting that their position is grounded in principle and not influenced by personal relationships or material considerations.

“Our public interventions have always been in defence of vision, character, and conviction in leadership. In that regard, we have openly and deliberately expressed support for H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia based on merit, intellectual depth, resilience, and a demonstrated commitment to the long-term development of Ghana,” the statement said.

The Dombo family further underscored its long-standing political legacy, which it said is rooted in integrity, inclusion, service, and sacrifice, cautioning that its name and heritage should not be misused for “transient political narratives or sensational headlines.”

Touching on Dr Bawumia’s credentials, the family praised his leadership style, policy depth, and contribution to national discourse on economic management, digital innovation, and public sector reforms. They noted that his calm disposition and respect for democratic institutions make him the kind of leader the NPP needs as it repositions itself for the future. “At a time when the party must broaden its appeal, reconnect with its grassroots, and inspire a new generation of supporters, his leadership offers credibility, trust, and continuity of values,” the statement added.

The family therefore called on The Chronicle newspaper to correct what it described as a serious misrepresentation and to exercise greater care in its editorial processes, especially when dealing with respected family names and political legacies. “This clarification is issued in good faith and in the interest of the public record,” the statement concluded.
