Sokpare Family wants REGSEC to call WMA to order over plan to demolish Tendamba School

Filed by: Hafiz Timbile Adams

The Sokpare family of Wa, through its solicitor Daniel B. Bewel (Esq.), is urging the Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to intervene in the intended demolition of the Tendamba Primary School by the Wa Municipal Assembly (WMA) to make way for the construction of the 24-hr Economy Market.

In a letter dated May 1, 2026 and addressed to the REGSEC Chairman and Regional Minister, the family said the WMA is adamant on pulling down the school “and has since contacted the school authorities to relocate the pupils for demolition exercise to commence.” This is despite a legal challenge against the Assembly’s decision to demolish the school, with a motion for interlocutory injunction pending the determination of the substantive case.

The family contends that the application for interlocutory injunction, filed at the Wa High Court and served on the Assembly, “constitutes a suspension of any activities on the land” until it is determined.” They describe the recent moves by the Assembly as “unlawful” and “a clear disrespect for the authority of the Court.”

The Sokpare family warned that the “unlawful decision of the Assembly” may be met with confrontation, noting that every lawful means will be used “to prevent the demolition of the school while the motion is pending.” They further serve notice that they will not sit aloof while the authority of the Court is disregarded by the WMA.

It is for this reason the REGSEC Chairman is requested to intervene and “advise the Assembly to hold off on the said demolition” until the determination of the motion for interlocutory injunction.

It will be recalled that the decision to relocate the Tendamba Primary School to allow for the construction of the 24-hr Economy Market has been met with resistance. While some landlords claiming to be the true owners of the land support the idea, others with similar claims of ownership have vehemently rejected it.

The standoff has led the disagreeing clans of the Sokpare family to take the matter to court in a bid to prevent the school from being replaced with the market. A motion for interlocutory injunction pending the conclusion of the main case is set to be heard on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the High Court, Wa.
